Treatment typically involves managing pain through rest to protect the injury and manage inflammation. Encouraging movement recovery with safe and gentle exercise and physical conditioning to regain strength and functionality.
Your session may include any or all of the following treatments:
- Manual Therapy: Massage, myofascial releases, joint mobilisation techniques. PIM and MET
- Taping: Supportive/rigid strapping & kinesiology taping
- Electrotherapy: Therapeutic ultrasound & interferential Therapy
- Exercise: Biomechanical exercise & stretching
- Traction: Manual 'stretching' of the spine, to reduce pressure on the discs

FAQ
Everything You Need To Know
What conditions can physiotherapy help with?
Physiotherapy manages a wide range of conditions affecting the musculoskeletal, neurological and cardiovascular systems. Common issues include back and neck pain, joint and muscle injuries, arthritis, post-operative recovery, balance disorders and chronic conditions like osteoporosis. Physiotherapists also assist with rehabilitation after surgery or injury, providing targeted strategies to restore movement and reduce discomfort over time.
How long does it take to see results from physiotherapy?
The timeline varies depending on the severity of the condition, the individual’s general health and the type of treatment used. Some people may experience relief after one or two sessions, while others with more complex or chronic conditions may require several weeks or months of consistent treatment. Ongoing progress reviews help guide the duration and intensity of care.
Do I need a referral to see a physiotherapist in Australia?
No, a referral is not required to see a physiotherapist privately in Australia. However, referrals may be necessary if you plan to access physiotherapy under Medicare, through DVA, WorkCover, or a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan. In those cases, your GP will provide a care plan outlining the support available.
Do I need a doctor’s referral?
You do not need a doctor’s referral to attend physiotherapy treatment, though your doctor may choose to give you one to help provide us with information that’s useful for your care.
You do need a doctor’s referral if you’ll be claiming your treatment costs from:
- WorkCover, ICARE & other self-insurers
- Motor vehicle accidents covered by Third Party Insurance (CTP)
- Medicare Chronic Disease Management (CDM) Program, formerly known as the Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) program); a subsidised program
- Department of Veterans Affairs claims
